Red Skull (Bust #3) - Intro

The basis for this conversion will be Young Miniatures' 1/10th scale SS-Totenkopfverbände Officer (YM1811--OOB presentation can be found here).

This will be a "younger" Red Skull in my canon. The stock figure is depicted with the rank of Hauptsturmführer (Captain); however, I want to show a more senior rank and am thus leaning towards that of Standartenführer (Colonel). Most of the insignia will be removed (epaulettes, ribbon bar, and Infantry Assault Badge)--at this point, I don't know to what extent I will embellish the decorations.

To date, I have removed the aforementioned insignia and "erased" the rank tab; attached the collar and die; and have begun reworking the face.

That's about it for now. More to follow. . .

UPDATE - 27.02.2012. . . I spent the evening fairing the die (pedestal column) to the underside of the bust, and finishing said undersides. I figure two or three more sessions ought to do it. Then I can add the plinth to the pedestal and finish it.

Knight Models' Moon Knight (KMV028)

I received KM's Moon Knight (77/500) as a gift over the weekend. Frankly, I love the piece; but objectively, regrettably this is a dramatic step back for KM. In fact, this offering is more reminiscent of Dr. Doom or the first Iron Man than it's immediate predecessor, Loki.

Which suggests to me that QC is something that occurs by chance, not design, at KM. As I've already mentioned, I love the kit, and the version of MK selected ("Vengeance of" series rendering), but it is going to be a long-haul project that will involve quite a bit of re- detailing/sculpting, grinding/sanding, and polishing. So be it. . .

To date, I have attached the left arm, roughed-in numerous "sinks", and cleaned-up the resin cape. A good beginning, but no more than that--a beginning.

Stay tuned. . .

UPDATE - 21.02.2012. . . The legs have been pegged, and I have begun re-working the provided groundwork. Not much thought went into this one, but at least the core is there for a rather neat mod. . .

Looking ahead in 2012. . .

The 2012 Atlanta Show is now behind me. I hope everyone had/has an uneventful and safe trip home. My prayers are with LTC Mike Hall, USA (Ret.) who had a rather eventful--and less than enjoyable--week in Atlanta. Get well soon, my friend!

And the Atlanta Show is now behind me--literally and figuratively. All good things must come to an end, and the time has come.

Which means that I am now truly compelled to revise the originally published tentative slate for 2012. Here goes. . .

1) Loki (Knight Models 75mm)
2) Divio Juckal [SP vârcolac] (Smart Max, 1/35th)
3) Moon Knight (Knight Models, 75mm)
4) "Lord of Asgard" (Andrea, 54mm)
5) Red Skull [Bust #2] (Young Miniatures, 1/10th scale)

As always, subject--and quite likely!--to change.

Finally, insofar as the blog is concerned, it is also quite likely you will see an ebb in the activity herein. Henceforth, it will serve as a personal on-line journal of my creative pursuits at my discretion.

I will always be a sculptor and a miniaturist because that is what I am. But whereas I once believed that to be an artist ones work had to be seen, the fallacy of that belief has been made painfully clear to me over the last few years, particularly with the ascendency of undiscerning "Academics". It is time to retreat into my closet and not only do what I do best, but enjoy most!

35th Annual AMFS: No Comments save for. . .

1) Cool Mini or Not was there as a first-time vendor. And they came loaded for bear! They were GREAT(!!!), and it was wonderful to have not only a purveyor of modelling supplies at the Show once again, but a fantasy-dedicated vendor as well! Thanks to all who stopped by and patronized their tables: it was the busiest I have seen any vendor in a secondary room ever!! May it be the first of many!

2) This was my last Atlanta Show. I will not say ever, for things might change in the years to come, but it's best to know when to bow out. And the message was loud and clear. . .

The hat trick is a fait accompli!

In other words, the Great White Ape is [all but] done, and I am relieved to say that the raging simian is just about off my back!!

All that remains to be done, aside from the usual final once-over, is to paint the club. This is a bit of a headscratcher, if only because the options are limitless! I might take a day or so to ponder the possibilities. . .

Which will leave me about 48 hrs to review, photograph, and box the "terrible trio". . .

¡La última vez!

White Ape of Barsoom - Painting (4): Groundwork (II)

Once the bust of Herr Schmidt was completed, the evening has been largely dedicated to Barsoomian flora. The dominant species in the Barsoomian dead sea bottoms--and elsewhere--is the ubiquitous yellow moss/lichen.

I have applied the moss covering using Woodland Scenics products-- it is now drying. Unfortunately, I will not be able to return to the groundwork until Sunday, when I will hopefully have sufficient time to airbrush it, permanently attach the figure, and leave me but a few hours remaining to correct, tweak, and enhance.

Two down. . .

Just completed the Red Skull bust! As with ALVH, still the pre-Show final once-over to be done in just about a week's time. . .

09 February 2012

One down, two to go. . .

Save for some remaining outlining and the final once-over, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is DONE!

Best call it a night. . .

Red Skull (Bust)-Painting (11): Wrapping-up 2...

The modelling on this project has officially concluded! The cigarette holder has been primed, undercoated, and mounted!! All that now remains is lacquering the holder, touching-up the flesh of the affected fingers, and painting the cigarette.

Almost there!

UPDATE - 09.02.2012. . . The holder has been lacquered and the cigarette u/c'ed.

White Ape of Barsoom - Painting (4): Groundwork (I)

Work has been unseasonably and atypically brutal for the last three days with no respite in sight. Phase 5 was finally continued today, with the basic colours and the first layers of pigments applied and sealed. This is a multi-layered, multi-media groundwork that will hopefully effectively re-create the Barsoomian landscape around the dead sea bottoms.

Very close. . .

Red Skull (Bust)-Painting (10): Wrapping-up . . .

The RK has been painted and permanently attached. The usual tweaks remain--outlining, shading, etc., but the most difficult of the "accessories" is now a fait accompli.

NEXT: The cigarette holder. . .

White Ape of Barsoom - Painting (3): Intermezzo

Phase 3--Glazing--is just about done. As I mentioned in my last posting, this will continue right until the very end to optimize the lighting and depth of the sculpture.

Phase 4--Head and Hair--was continued today. The head, save the eyes, is just about done; and Phase 1 (Oils) of the mouth/teeth was completed as well.

Phase 5--Groundwork and Accessories--was initiated today. This will be the toughest of the painting segments of this project. The modelling of the groundwork was finished today. Undercoating will hopefully be completed this week--I can then focus on the actual painting and "build-ups" over the weekend.

It's gonna be close. . .

04 February 2012

ALVH-Painting - Wrapping-up: Groundwork, etc.

The "groundwork" is now fully u/c'ed, and is now ready for finishing: to this end, the slats are all but done.

With the main "flooring" essentially done, I decided to transfer the figure to its permanent display base. There will be some touch-ups required on the flooring, but otherwise it has come together nicely.

The axe head is lacquered, and the axe has been permanently mounted. Save for the stovepipe hat--the vampire's, not Abe's, assembly of the vignette has been completed. Movin' right along. . .

FOLLOW-UP. . . Just finished the painting of the hat, and it is now in the oven. If ready-to-attach once it comes out, then this project can be deemed completed. Still loads of things to do, and at least 4-5 hrs. worth of integrating touch-ups and tweaks, but for my purposes the vignette is DONE!

Red Skull (Bust)-Painting: Assembly

Managed to clear-out a little space on an all-too crowded bench with the permanent attachment of the namesake to the torso.

If I can complete the shirt-cuff tonight, this piece might be in the books by the end of the weekend!

Stay tuned!

FOLLOW-UP. . . The shirt-cuff has been completed and the forearm has been permanently attached. Save for the cigarette holder and the RK, the bust is DONE!

02 February 2012

Red Skull (Bust)-Painting (9): Home stretch-2 ...

The collar patches and the ribbon of the EKII have been completed, as has the Eichenlaubs of the RK. All that remains to be done are the RK and the cigarette holder. Assembly will be well underway by the weekend. . . !
