Lord Commander Jeor Mormont (the "Old Bear"), 997th Lord Commander of the Sworn Brother- hood of the Night's Watch, is one of my favourite characters in George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire saga, to say nothing of HBO’s Game of Thrones. So when I stumbled upon Golem Art’s 1/9th scale bust of a Templar, ca. 1250, I immediately knew that was my Ser Jeor!
I was not at all familiar with Golem Art. Unfortunately, after a moderate amount of research, I know little more than it is a Czech manufacturer. Where things get really confusing is that some of their pieces are also marketed under the Black Dog label. The subject of this review does not appear to be one of those.
Back to the matter at hand. Scalewise, while marketed as a 200mm bust (1/9th scale), this is actually a 1/10th scale bust, slightly smaller even. The bust is a one piece casting with a sepa- rate—and keyed!— pedestal. Save for a rather noticeable mold-shift along the [back] seam of the one-piece mold, the hard, grey resin casting is excellent! Even if this were not to be the base piece of a conversion, it would be nothing to be overly concerned about: noticeable, but not significant -- and easy to reduce.
As I do not intend to depict a historical subject, any critique along those lines would be super- fluous and extraneous. That being said, the garments are not what one would expect to find on a 13th c. Templar, and with but the boxart as a painting guide, I would urge additional caution.
Re: the project before us, while I have an idea of what I want to do, the particulars are still quite vague. More as the situation warrants. . .
